Debates

June 13, 2011

I have asked my opposing candidates to hold a series of monthly debates beginning 4-5 weeks (weeks of 07/10 or 07/11) from this writing and running through October.  We will have an independent moderator for these debates.  John Burger, the Democratic candidate, has graciously accepted, agreeing that this is one of the most important elections in Jasper's history.  I indicated to John I thought it was of utmost importance to ensure the voters of Jasper are aware of where all the candidates stand on the issues so that they can make an educated decision on whom they are voting for in the mayoral race.  John agreed.

I do not intend to put words in Terry Seitz's mouth, nor interpret Terry's response incorrectly, but will make some inferences about our conversation on this matter.  Terry believes it was inappropriate for me to contact him personally to challenge him to these debates.  I believe, if memory serves me correctly, Terry stated that another party other than myself should have contacted him to propose the idea and would not accept my challenge directly.  Terry also stated he would participate only in one debate, if he decided to debate at all.

I commend John for accepting my challenge, whereas I am very disappointed in Terry's response.  His position on accessibility expressed at the October 2010 forum for primary candidates appears to be true.  If one is walking around and comes across him, or happens to run into him on his trips throughout the state, he may be accessible.  His phone number is unlisted and is a hard person to contact.  Accessible?  I think not.
